Tolstoy places on the map of Tula

18 September 2025

Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy's contribution to the life of Tula and all of Russia cannot be overestimated — his creativity, public position and organizational activities (including farmsteads and educational projects) left a deep mark and made the Tula land an important part of Tolstoy's geography. It was here that the writer was formed, his works were created, his educational and economic activities unfolded.

On September 9, 2025, the 197th anniversary of the writer's birth was solemnly celebrated at the Yasnaya Polyana Museum Estate. This date has once again drawn attention to those places that allow us to touch Tolstoy's legacy and feel his living presence in the history and culture of Tula.

We offer a selection of "Tolstoy places" in Tula and the region — from famous estates and museums to modern spaces that continue the Tolstoy tradition.

1.The Museum-estate of Leo Tolstoy "Yasnaya Polyana"

The writer's family estate, where he lived and created his great works. The house, park, garden and Tolstoy's grave have been preserved here. The manor is especially beautiful in early autumn: yellow foliage, fog in the morning and silence enhance the impression of immersion in the atmosphere of the late 19th century.

2. Pirogov estates of Counts Tolstoy (Maloe Pirogovo)

A place associated with Tolstoy's childhood and family memories. In autumn, the manor alleys become picturesque, creating the atmosphere in which the future writer was formed.

3. Nikolskoye-Vyazemskoye Estate Museum

The family estate on the paternal side. Here Tolstoy not only rested, but also engaged in agriculture and beekeeping, an important part of his philosophy of "life on earth".

4. Культурно- L. N. T. Exhibition Complex

A modern branch of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum in the center of Tula. Here you can see exhibitions about Tolstoy's Tula, get acquainted with exhibitions and lectures. In autumn, this is especially important — you can combine a walk around the city with a cultural program.

5. Monument to Leo Tolstoy(Tolstoy Square)

A rare student of the 90s and 2000s does not know this famous monument, which is a symbol of how Tula honors the memory of Lev Nikolaevich. Completely renovated in 2025, the square will be an excellent stop for photos and reflections on the writer's place in culture.

6. Hotel "Scherer"

A historic 19th-century mansion turned into a hotel. The building is associated with the pre-revolutionary cultural life of Tula, when Tolstoy actively communicated with city merchants and intellectuals. To stay here means to feel the atmosphere of the time in which the writer lived. The rooms at the Scherer Hotel are named after the heroes of Leo Tolstoy's novels, as well as people and places close to him:

  • "Anna Karenina"
  • "Natasha Rostova"
  • "Prince Andrew"
  • "Sofya Andreevna"
  • Yasnaya Polyana

7. Russian cuisine restaurant "Food and Peace"

The restaurant's name refers to Tolstoy's greatest novel, War and Peace. It serves traditional dishes that are close to the cuisine that was familiar in the noble estates of the 19th century. The place fits perfectly into the cultural itinerary — dinner after the tour becomes a continuation of the "Tolstoy immersion".
