In 1930, the town was renamed Istra, after the name of the river flowing through it.

As a result of a short occupation during the Great Patriotic War, from November 26 to December 10, 1941, Istra was almost completely destroyed.

Unique trophy exhibits, such as military machinery, personal belongings found at the battlefields (from German tanks to a compass and a spoon), are kept in the funds of the Lenino-Snegirevsky Military History Museum.
