Three eras are intertwined in the landmarks of the town of Shchyokino and the Shchyokinsky District: pre-Petrine Russia, Russia of the late 19th – early 20th centuries, and the Soviet period. Taking a look at tourist sites, their addresses and coordinates, you can easily choose what attracts you the most as there are literary, ethnographic, historical landmarks and lots of other sights.
One of the most captivating attractions in the vicinity of Shchyokino and Tula Region as a whole is the Yasnaya Polyana Museum Estate. The trail of one of the greatest writers can also be found at the Kozlova Zaseka station, which is a 5-minute drive from the estate. This is an interesting museum full of character, in the territory of which great photos may be taken. Tolstoy also owned the Maloye Pirogovo Estate, which is located south of Shchyokino. The author often stayed there as a child. Now there is a museum, where you can become familiar with some episodes of Tolstoy’s life.
Among the attractions of the town of Shchyokino, the monument to the Soviet rock musician and poet Igor Talkov stands out. The famous singer-songwriter was born near the town, in the village of Gretsovka.
A large exhibition dedicated to the Great Patriotic War is housed in the Shchyokino Museum of Local Lore. Important historical documents and other exhibits that can be viewed on the tour tell visitors about the 52 days of the occupation of the area in 1941. Few people know that the very first Eternal Flame was lit near Shchyokino, in the village of Pervomaysky.
The former provincial center – Krapivna – located in the district was turned into a real open-air museum dedicated to the merchant town of the 19th century. The international nettle festival is held here in summer. About 500 years ago, Krapivna was a fortress of the Great Abatis Border. Earthen ramparts and traces of ancient settlements have been preserved in the Shchyokinsky District.
This is the most literature-focused of the districts of Tula Region. Discover it for yourself!
